So the Cutlass needs new valve cover gaskets for sure, so I figure that it’s better to do them now than later. My question is: what type of gaskets should I go for? I want close to the OEM thickness because clearance is an issue, so I’m just wondering should I buy the 5/32 cork set or the rubber set? Vista Cruiser for your time.

Cork. It’s never done me any wrong. I love the big rolls of cork gasket material for making my own gaskets.

Go with the highest quality Cork you can fit in your budget.

Make sure the Cover surface isn’t warped around the bolts and watch your torque on installation.

I've always used cork on older cars. The valve covers are designed for it. Only used rubber on modern cars.

Definitely cork

If you want extra insurance against a leak, bolt it down temporarily without sealant so the gasket will take the shape of the cover and mounting surface. Take it out, apply a thin layer of sealant on the gasket, and then bolt down for good. Same trick works for oil pans.

The bolts occasionally come lose on the valve covers on my Olds 350 and need tightening every now and then.

That one has all 442 options, so technically it's a 442 Vista Cruiser
